Hey there - time for me to put up something different to my usual mammoth stories.
You may recall that at the end of "Strike of the Nobodies", the concept of alternate dimensions was revealed, with people coming from the mysterious D4 realm into the core universe where I set all my stories in (D1, or Primus). Well, it's time to delve into one of these other dimensions and see how things are different across these multiple dimensions.
This is a one-shot story based within the D9 universe, a place where law and order reigns supreme. Where the most respected jobs go to the attorney and prosecutor firms. Where aggressive finger pointing is the norm in court, along with cups of coffee, magnificent breakdowns and senility in the judges.
In case you haven't guessed already, it's based on the highly popular Ace Attorney games. I hope you enjoy this little trip from the norm - feedback would be appreciated if you do not mind.
Enjoy!

High Prosecutors’ Office
Main Parking Lot
“Um…E-Excuse me” a meek voice called out over the concrete parking lot in front of the High Prosecutors’ Office to the passing people. Cars and vans drove steadily by, loading and unloading their cargo of people and papers as they stopped outside of the main building. Drowning out a quiet voice, they caused visible annoyance to its owner. The person was a young female, seemingly fresh out of law school. She wore what looked like a blue skirt with a white shirt and a black coloured suit jacket. A blue tie was worn loosely around her neck, obviously fastened up in haste and panic. However, the main thing that stood out was a long, grey fox tail dragging behind her, its tip smoothly combed and preened along with her grey fur. In short, she was a youthful female vixen, her grey fur a contrast to her young eyes and face.
“Hey! You!” a sharp male voice called out from across the parking lot
“U-Um…Me?” the female fox stuttered
“Yeah, you” the male replied. It belonged to a similarly mammalian creature; this time black in hue and hedgehog in genus. A blue and red suit merged into his fur, making him meld into the shadows if he so wanted. However; a solid gold gauntlet resided upon his right arm, reaching all the way up towards his shoulder. It glinted in the morning sunlight as he beckoned the youthful fox towards him. “You the new lawyer? We’ve been waiting for you for a while”
“Umm…Well, you see, I am a new lawyer” the female said shyly “But I’m really not sure-”
“A lawyer is a lawyer, so get in” the male replied, grabbing her arm and leading her inside the offices, despite her protests. As they wandered into the clean and pristine office, he continued to talk to his impromptu guest “Of course, Prosecution is a more noble profession than those poxy defence people”
“Well, funny you should say that-” the female said, before being cut off again
“What’s you name, by the way?” the hedgehog asked in his usually curt manner
“Umm…Miki. Miki Hearte” she replied
“Interesting” the male replied “Urtheart, by the way. Just Urtheart”
“That’s an odd name…” Miki mused
“I know at least 8 other people with the same name…” Urtheart said, smiling to himself in a mystic way “Regardless, I’d best introduce you to what we do around here”
“Um, I really-” Miki tried to say, but Urtheart ignored her worries and took her fro a tour of the High Prosecutors Offices.
“Anyway, glad to know you’re ready and willing to work on our side of the law courts” Urtheart continued “We have many facilities to offer you in your pursuit of justice”
“Justice? You…You mean you’re not one of these ‘Guilty by any means’ people?”
“No – I might be harsh, but I am also fair” Urtheart replied “Sometimes, the truth is the greatest reward”
“I see” Miki said to herself, as she noticed an orange furred fox in a detective’s coat wander towards them, drinking swiftly from a paper coffee cup “Um, who’s that?”
“A local detective, and my close advisor for my cases” Urtheart replied “All Prosecutors have one detective that they go to for their cases. Though they seem to work better for others than for some…”
“Um…Explain”
“Well, naming no names, but some detectives seem to goof off on their cases so much, they’re living on Instant Noodle meals…”
“Geez; that’s tough” Miki sighed as the two wandered into a large doorway
“Now this” Urtheart explained “Is our VR arena. We can simulate court ‘battles’ for training purposes and to keep our lawyers sharp”
“Who’s that?” Miki asked, pointing at a youthful male human with shabby black hair and a green visor. He was wearing a long black trenchcoat and trousers combo, with a white cravat and blue waistcoat. He was in a simulated green environment; a VR judge and court all around him. Opposite him stood a VR representation of a defence attorney; a similarly aged female with long brown hair, sharp white horns and a smart red suit with matching dragon tail.
“That’s one of our Prosecutors, Matt Black” Urtheart explained “Not a great Prosecutor in court, but he does have a good insight into the logical processes of a crime. Simply put, if he sees a way on how something happened, it’s pretty much how it happened”
“Is he always like that?” Miki asked as Matt nervously scattered various papers across the desk in front of him
“Sadly, yes” Urtheart sighed
“R-Right” Matt stuttered as the VR simulation continued “Miss Truth! I declare that you must provide the relevant evidence in order to support your wild, albeit credible, proposition”
“Evidence?” the VR female called back “I’ll give you evidence!”
“Eep” Matt said in a panicked tone as a simulated breath of fire came his way and engulfed him in pixel-shaped flames. The fire died away, leaving a visibly shaken Matt with a small, real flame burning on his hair
“We could never understand how the VR simulation of Sofia Truth always sets Black’s hair on fire…” Urtheart muttered “Every single time…Even in court too, it happens”
“He must be an unlucky person” Miki said to herself as the two left the VR arena and headed towards the main offices
“3 cases; no wins thus far” Urtheart replied “Though to be fair, the defendants were all falsely accused, so the moral victory counts in his favour”
“And what’s your record?” Miki asked
“15 cases; 5 wins, 6 losses, 3 out of court settlements and 1…Well, I’d like to not mention that one” Urtheart answered, before stopping outside a door “Here we go – Room 0314 – Your new office”
“W-Wow…” Miki stuttered as she strode into the grand room. A pristine wooden desk stood in front of a large window; equally wooden bookcases lining the walls of the room. A large portrait of a serene countryside view hung on a wall next to a deep red and rich velvet sofa. Miki smiled as she sat down on the sofa and began to casually bounce up and down on it “This is amazing!”
“I’m glad you like it” Urtheart replied “But what was it you were trying to say earlier?”
“Oh, the fact I’m a defence attorney, not a prosecutor” Miki said casually “Now; when’s lunch?”
--
Almost immediately after she said that, a loud shattering of glass could be heard as a figure was flung out of the window. It landed with a splash in a nearby pool, the defenestrated person not too worse for wear
“And stay out!” Urtheart yelled from the, now broken, office window down at the sodden Miki
“Just my luck…” Miki said to herself, ruffling her wet fur as she got out of the pond. “Now what can I do?”
“Another defence attorney tries to get into the Prosecutor’s offices?” a male voice asked Miki, seemingly appearing from nowhere. It belonged to a male human, around the same age as Matt. He wore what looked like an oriental dragon-emblazed jacket with a white shirt and matching trousers and boots. A silver medallion hung around his neck, glistening in the smooth breeze and giving off a vibe of extreme power.
“And you are…?”
“Blake Downe; defence attorney at Truth and Co. Law Offices” the male replied, rearranging his grey bandana over his mullet-style hair
“Miki Hearte” the fox replied, shaking the human’s hand “New defence attorney”
“Ah; so you’re the person we’ve been looking for” Blake smiled “Come on – we’ve been waiting for you”
“Just so long as you don’t try throwing me out of any windows” Miki replied
“Nah, we don’t do things like that”
“That’s good”
“We just burn your hair a little”
“WHAT?!” Miki exclaimed in shock, her fur standing on end
“Kidding, kidding” Blake laughed “We don’t do things like that if you’re defence – only to random Prosecutors”
“Lovely…” Miki sighed, before muttering to herself “Why didn’t I pick a different, safer job; like a lumberjack or a lion tamer…” She looked at her defence attorney’s badge, before saying to herself again “This is what I am – a searcher for the truth, a finder for justice.
"I am an Ace Attorney”
